Glider Life
Ninety-seven years ago this week, on April 28, 1929, Maxine Dunlap qualified as the first woman glider pilot in the United States by soaring over the dunes of the Sunset District:

Dunlap kept her glider aloft for 50 seconds, traveled 990 feet, and reached 175 feet above her starting point, which was a large sand dune around 35th Avenue and Santiago Street. She easily exceeded the previous woman’s record attempt, a non-qualifying 17 seconds by someone named Amelia Earhart.
