Birthplace of a One-Armed Bandit

Few historical plaques are better located in San Francisco for stumbling upon than this one on Market Street at the gore of Bush and Battery streets:

I have stopped and read it a dozen times in my life, as it has been on my path from teenage days of downtown temp jobs to watching my daughter in the Chinese New Year parade to heading to a coffee date with a friend just last week.

You’d think such a prominently placed tablet would mark something monumental to San Francisco or California history, but it’s really about something more commonly associated with Las Vegas.
